ORDER FOR THE PUBLIC WORSHIP of GOD

 Fifth Sunday after Epiphany                  February 09, 2020

Responsive Call to Worship    (Psalm 95:6-10, 1-2)

   Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!

            For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

   Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as when your fathers

   put Me to the test and put Me to the proof, though they had seen My work.

            For forty years I loathed that generation and said,

            "They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known My ways."

   Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation!

            Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving;

            let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!

*Hymn #104                         “O Worship the King”                   Lyons

*Prayer of Adoration

*Affirmation of Faith - The Children’s Catechism

   What is prayer?

            Prayer is praising God, giving thanks for all his blessings,

            and asking him for the things he has promised in the Bible.

   In whose name should we pray?

            Only in the name of Christ.

Gospel Lesson                            Matthew 7:24-29 (ESV)

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it." 28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Affirmation of Holy Scripture - Psalm 119:92-93

   If Your Law had not been our delight, we would have perished in our affliction.

   We will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given us life.

*Hymn           “The Lord Will Provide”                              Newton, Smith

   1. Though troubles assail me and dangers affright,

   Though friends should all fail and foes all unite;

   Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide,

   The scripture assures us the Lord will provide.

   The birds without barn or storehouse are fed

   From them let us learn to trust for our bread:

   His saints, what is fitting, shall ne’er be denied,

   So long as it’s written, the Lord will provide.

   2. We may, like the ships, by tempest be tossed

   On perilous deeps, but cannot be lost (over)

   Though Satan enrages the wind and the tide,

   The promise engages, the Lord will provide.

   His call we obey, like Abram of old,

   Not knowing our way, but faith makes us bold;

   For though we are strangers we have a good Guide,

   And trust in all dangers, the Lord will provide.

   3. When Satan appears to stop up our path,

   and fills us with fears, we triumph by faith;

   He cannot take from us, though oft he has tried,

   This heart-cheering promise, the Lord will provide.

   He tells us we’re weak, our hope is in-vain,

   The good that we seek we ne’er shall obtain,

   But when such suggestions our spirits have plied,

   This answers all questions, the Lord will Provide.

   4. No strength of our own, or goodness we claim,

   Yet since we have known the Savior’s great Name;

   in this our strong tower for safety we hide,

   The Lord is our power, the Lord will provide.

   When life sinks apace and death is in view,

   This word of His grace shall comfort us through:

   No fearing or doubting with Christ on our side,

   We hope to die shouting, “The Lord will provide!”

Offertory & Prayer of Thanksgiving

Sermon         “Build Your House on the Rock”                      Pastor John Uhl

Confessing Our Need of Christ Together and Individually

   Almighty God, merciful Father,

   every time we rebel against Your just-rule in our lives

   we enslave ourselves to the tyranny of guilt and sin.

   We exchange freedom for bondage and health for sickness of soul.

   We are left miserable. Forgive us, we pray.

   We have not lived out the new reality of life in Christ.

   We have not understood the power of the gospel that brings forgiveness and transformation.

   We pray that You enlighten our minds, soften our hearts, and strengthen our wills

   so the power of Christ’s resurrection will make us new people,

   enslaved to nothing but Christ who brings us glorious freedom.

   It is in His Mighty Name we pray.

Assurance of the Lord’s Pardon  (Colossians 1:13-14)

   He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Lord’s Supper - We celebrate the Lord’s Supper every Sunday at Grace Covenant. All who trust in Jesus and Him alone for their salvation are invited to partake. If you believe your child is ready to take Communion, please ask our Pastor about the process.
